“In a literary market flooded with shallow yogic adventure stories both fact and fiction, promising little more than sensationalism or entertainment here comes THE YOGA OF MAX’S DISCONTENT, an important, authentic, believable, riveting, account on the level of Hermann Hesse or Victor Frankl, a superbly written meditation on effort and grace, a do or die quest for spiritual transformation, a journey from darkness to light, a psychological thriller, which strips away artifice in a relentless quest to discover meaning, or how the lotus rises from the muck of a Bronx sewer to blossom calmly in the cool Himalayan moonlight.”

–Sharon Gannon, Jivamukti Yoga

This is not a self-help book. It’s fiction about an investment banker who becomes a yogi in the Himalayas. Yet, this book will touch your heart, impact you in some small, indecipherable way so that your life is never the same again. In the five years I spent consumed by the book, I don’t think I wrote it. I became just a medium for the story to express itself and followed Max on his mad, consuming quest for transcendence from the drug dens in Bronx to surreal Indian night markets, hidden yoga ashrams and caves high in the Himalayas, furiously noting his story down.

If you’re in the 1st 150 people who buy your copy of The Yoga of Max’s Discontent in the pre-order period, you’ll get stuff that’ll make a tangible difference in your life. Not bracelets and signed notes and vacations to Maldives, but two real things that have changed my life forever:

1. My full 2 hour meditation course targeted to improve your focus and concentration: If you find yourself checking Facebook and Quora in the middle of work or having periodic uncontrollable angry thoughts at people you love or just not being able to build a meditation routine after years of trying, you’ll always stop short of the greatness that can come only from single-minded attention. An average person wastes 40-60% of their time and uses only a fraction of their mental capacity*. I’ll teach you the exact scientific, rational techniques I’ve learnt in five years of studying meditation to measurably improve your concentration in one month.
*Daniel Goleman, Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence.

2. The Advanced Eat like a Yogi nutrition guide + How to Quit Sugar in 7 Days video course: Kerry Bajaj, my wife, is NY’s leading nutritionist and has developed a nutrition guide to integrate a yogic diet with ease in modern life to give you a “clean energy” through the day. These exact techniques helped me lose 20 pounds in <1 year without trying. Her full Quit Sugar in 7 Days Course includes a 7-day meal plan with recipes that has helped hundreds of people quit processed sugar and transform their addictive behaviors with sugar forever to significantly enhance their energy.

and two things that are nice-to-have:

3. My first two novels from HarperCollins India: Both were #1 bestsellers, sold more than 200,000 copies, and were optioned into films.

4. A personal guarantee that if the book doesn’t affect you in any way I will re-fund your purchase. Just send me a note, no questions asked.

The total value of these=$229 (Meditation Course=$99; Kerry’s Guides=$119; My novels=$20) is 10x what The Yoga of Max’s Discontent costs=$13-$30. So yes, it’s a good deal. But that’s not the point. Every gift in this pre-order package is a result of years we’ve spent burning in the quest for truth so I know they’re effective.

Can you tell me a little more about the book?

The Yoga of Max’s Discontent will be released worldwide by Penguin Random House’s Riverhead imprint on May 3rd. This is the back cover synopsis and you can read excerpts here.

In this captivating and surprising novel of spiritual discovery, a young American travels to India and finds himself tested physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

Max Pzoras is the poster child for the American Dream. The child of Greek immigrants who grew up in a dangerous New York housing project, he triumphed over his upbringing and became a successful Wall Street analyst. Yet on the frigid December night he’s involved in a violent street scuffle, Max begins to confront questions about suffering and mortality that have dogged him since his mother’s death.

His search takes him to the farthest reaches of India, where he encounters a mysterious night market, almost freezes to death on a hike up the Himalayas, and finds himself in an ashram in a drought-stricken village in South India. As Max seeks answers to questions that have bedeviled him — can yogis walk on water and live for 200 years without aging? Can a flesh-and-blood man ever achieve nirvana? – he struggles to overcome his skepticism and the pull of family tugging him home. His unquenchable curiosity ultimately compels him to embark on a dangerous solitary meditation in a freezing Himalayan cave, where his physical and spiritual endurance is put to the ultimate test.

Both a gripping adventure story and a journey of tremendous inner transformation, THE YOGA OF MAX’S DISCONTENT is a contemporary take on man’s classic quest for transcendence, a Siddhartha for our generation.

There are some specific reasons I wrote this book

First and foremost, the book is one man’s adventure from drug dens in the Bronx to surreal Indian night markets, hidden yoga ashrams and caves high in the Himalayas, not a spiritual thesis, but these are the questions that had occupied me for years that led me to the story.

1. Can a spiritual search be the roar of a lion?

Vivekachudamani, Shankara’s classic poem from 8 A.D says that man’s cry to understand the reason for his existence is the roar of a lion. It is his birthright to ask “Who am I?” and force the silent universe to give him an answer. The sages of the past went through extreme physical and emotional hardships to answer that question. Unfortunately today, the search for the soul has become new agey and warm and fuzzy with people throwing around words like “vibrations”, “chakras”, and “energy fields” without understanding or intent.
For years, I wanted to write a book that would make the search for one’s role in the universe a true, gut-wrenching adventure again. The Yoga of Max’s Discontent is that book.

2. Can an ordinary man develop Yogic super-powers like walking on water and levitating?

The Hatha Yoga Pradipika (15 B.C.) and Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras (4 B.C.) give strikingly rational, scientific arguments for how a yogi can walk on water, live for 200 years, see the future, control animals with his mind etc. Centuries before quantum physics, they argued that all matter was energy, some more concentrated, some less. If intense yoga can train you to see the underlying essence of everything as that one energy, then what difference is it if you walk on land or on water?
The more I read detailed manuals of ancient yoga and meditation practices, the more convinced I became of man’s infinite physical potential. And yet a large part of me still remained skeptical. The novel became my exploration into the fact vs. fiction of yogic powers.

3. Shouldn’t there be a more definitive reason why there is suffering in the world?

All religious traditions have tried to answer this question—none quite satisfactorily. Like most people, the question had always been at the back of my mind. Occasionally, it would jump to the front triggered by a bombing in Nigeria or kids begging on Mumbai traffic signals. But it wasn’t until my mother’s rapid decline from cancer that answering the question in a rational, scientific way became urgent for me. I read, traveled from Europe to India by road, lived in an ashram in South India, and meditated in the Himalayas for a year, going deep within to answer that question. The novel is my definitive answer to that question. Am I right? I don’t know but I’ve shown you the tip of the iceberg in THE YOGA OF MAX’S DISCONTENT. The rest you’ll uncover on your own.
